Harrisburg Area Women's News

October, 1979

THANKS

The staff of the Harrisburg Area Women's News wishes to thank all those groups and individuals who give volunteer time, articles, and information, and money donations. Without this valuable assistance, the Women's News could not exist.

The Harrisburg Area Women's News is a monthly communication medium for all area women, sponsored by the Harrisburg Women's Center and contributed to by a large number of local groups and individuals. Philosophically, we set aside our differnces of opinion while seeking understanding, cooperation, and mutual respect. Material for articles is printed whenever possible within our policy constraints of 1) moderate length, 2) no material which is considered to be sexist, racist, ageist, or homophobic, and 3) relevance to women of the greater Harrisburg area. Paid advertising is accepted. However, the presence of an ad in HAWN should be not construed to mean that HAWN accepts or endorses the policies or philosophies of the advertiser.

Supporting The Habit

(HER SAY) Federal District Judge Wilbur Owens sentenced Zola Humphries to a probated five-year prison term for stealing a $199 government check.

Humphries, 20-years-old, unmarried and the mother of three young children, told the judge she took her next-door neighbor's check to pay her delinquent utility bill.

Judge Owens, appointed to the federal bench by former President Richard Nixon, threatened Humphries with revoking her probation if she became pregnant again.

An attorney at the sentencing, quoted the judge as telling Humphries "If I had the power to compel you to go to a local doctor to have your tubes tied, I would do so. But I don't have that power.

Humphries still faces 11 counts of fraud for allegedly withdrawing about $4,000 illegally from the bank savings of other people.

Judge Owens, after Humphries' court appearance, stated "There seems to be a direct relationship between the number of children and committing crime."

AAUW Booksale

Each year the Harrisburg Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) holds a book sale at the Harrisburg East Mall.. The proceeds from this sale go toward. scholarships primarily for women and for local projects such as financial support of the Dauphin County Library System. Thousands of books are offered to the public at bargain rates and this year there are an outstanding number of volumes.

A major donation from the estate of a prominent Harrisburg family has been received. This private collection consists of beautifully bound sets and individual volumes, many of which are leatherbound. They include first editions, rare biographies, fine sets of Early American, Pennsylvania and English history, collector's children's books and more. In addition there will be the usual selection of bargain reading materials.

The sale will be held at the Hess's Court of the Harrisburg East Mall on Saturday, October 27 from 9:30 a.m. through 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday, October 28 from Noon. to 4:00 p.m.

But When We're Pregnant...

Dr. Paul Cameron, a psychologist from Pasadena, CA, at the National Right to Life Committee convention in Cincinnati, reported at length on a study he directed which, he claimed, showed that women who have abortions are more likely to hate humanity than women who do not; they are also more apt to smoke, drink and get high, drive less carefully, have more accidents, get more tickets, obtain more divorces, encourage suicide, tolerate homosexuality, favor capital punishment and own pets than are other women. In fact, said Cameron, the attitudes of women who get abortions are almost identical to those of men who kill in warfare.

HAWN Opens New Office

HAWN, for those of you who didn't know, used to occupy a small office at the Peace Center on Peffer Street and borrowed space at the Harrisburg Monthly to lay out the paper every month.

It really doesn't matter if you didn't know, however, for HAWN has just moved to its own office and lay-out room on the third floor of the YWCA, where we have our very own light table, our very own materials, and our very own scraps of press-type and

copy lying around.

We are immensely proud of our new office (Room 302), and invite you to help do lay-out, slip articles under the doors, or just visit. We are deeply grateful

to Harrisburg Monthly for their materials, space, and support which! they have given to us over the past four years, and know that we can continue to count on them for help. But it feels terrific to have a home of our own, and we hope that you will come by often to share it with

us.

You are welcome to stop by anytime, but we would like to see you most on the following dates:
